The Beating Heart of HR: Trust, Stories, and the Human Connection
At its core, HR isn’t just about policies, planning, or performance reviews. It’s about people. More specifically, those relationships are built on trust, humanity, and the courage to show up with real stories.
In my career, I’ve sat and supported leaders at every level, from first-line managers to members of the c-suite. And in those moments when the professional veneer slips and the rawness appears, the tears of frustration or sadness, the confessions of doubt, or reflections on loss or failure, I’ve never felt more honoured to be in that space with them.
These weren’t business meetings or 121s at that point, they were human conversations about how doubt seeps into decision-making, how personal upheaval rattles confidence, and how stress, burnout and failure whispers when no one’s listening. And that’s the point, I was trusted, invited and I was the person they turned to, to listen in their moments of turmoil……somewhere before that point, perhaps on another day, in another meeting, when I’d had their back, or challenged them, in a respectful way, the dynamic in our working relationship had shifted. Walls lowered. Trust grew.
I wasn’t expected to fix the issue or problem. Sometimes there wasn’t even a clear next step. Sometimes we paused. Reflected. Let the silence settle. Other times, I offered a glimpse into my own journey, a parallel moment, a similar misstep... because we all have them. And to them, they weren’t alone.
Because that’s the human in human resources.
We talk about strategy, compliance, KPIs - but trust? That’s the game-changer. Trusted relationships aren’t just soft skills. They’re business-critical assets. They create psychological safety, fuel innovation, and foster cultures where people bring their full, flawed, brilliant selves to the table.
When developing HR practitioners, I always say: Your impact isn’t measured by how well you know policy or can quote law and legislation, it's when the door closes and in how safe someone feels when they sit with you.
The real value we bring to organisations is rooted in relationships. If you build trust, practice empathy, and share stories that show humanity - not perfection - then the success metrics will follow.
Here’s to my fellow HR professionals who hold trust, offer perspective, and make business personal again.
